On this occasion, Minister Goldsmith, who was on his first official visit to Indonesia, said he really appreciated the policies carried out by the Indonesian Government and the province of Bali, in the context of conserving and protecting mangrove areas. "What this has done is very inspiring, and it is very exciting to participate in planting mangroves with the Minister and the Governor of Bali," Goldsmith said.

The Governor of Bali  Wayan Koster on the occasion emphasized that the Province of Bali in his leadership period continued to try to expand the mangrove planting area in several areas such as Denpasar, Badung, Klungkung, Buleleng and Jembrana. "I have also assigned the Head of the Bali Province Environment and Forestry Service (to expand the mangrove planting area,), supported by the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry and various components of the community who care about mangroves," he said.

In addition, the governor from Sembiran, Buleleng Regency has also intensified efforts to replant mangrove forests, regulate coastal area layouts, enforce laws against violations in the forestry sector and clean up and free mangroves from pollution from plastic waste that interferes with the growth and health of mangroves.

According to Governor Koster, Efforts to conserve mangrove areas are also in line with Bali Governor Regulation Number 24 of 2020 concerning Protection of Rivers, Springs, Lakes and Seas. “We in Bali actually have local wisdom, namely the Tumpek Wariga celebration, which is to glorify Bali's plants and nature. And technically, we have ordered the Head of the Bali Provincial Forestry and Environment Service to draw up a roadmap for reforestation plans in forest areas throughout Bali. So that the minimum target for green areas of 30% or even more can be met," he explained.

This policy is also supported by a Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) through the Directorate General of Human Settlements and the Directorate General of Highways and the Provincial Government of Bali to Support the Strengthening of the Functions of the Ngurah Rai Tahura Area through the Development of Infrastructure and Nature Tourism Facilities in the Context of Organizing the G20 Summit in Bali, which was signed last August.

On the other hand, the Director of Soil and Water Conservation of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Muhammad Zainal Arifin, explained to the group that mangrove conservation is part of the priority policies of the Indonesian Government under President Joko Widodo. The President targets the rehabilitation of mangrove forests in the country to reach 600 thousand hectares within the next three years. “Indonesia has the largest mangrove forest in the world, which is 3.36 million hectares. This includes the Tahura Ngurah Rai area, Bali, which includes 1,300 hectares of mangroves with exotic ecosystems," Zainal said.

Regarding the G20 event, Zainal also explained that currently Bali has rehabilitated the Mangrove Conservation Forest area, which is planned to be one of the destinations for heads of state who attend the G20 Summit. The area is a clear proof of Indonesia's commitment in efforts to reduce climate change issues. "This area is the first and only modern mangrove forest and nursery area in the world," he explained.

The visit of Lord Goldsmith and his staff to Indonesia and Bali was to discuss bilateral cooperation between the UK and Indonesia on climate and the environment, particularly the forestry sector and sustainable land use (FOLU).

The two countries agreed to sign a cooperation in the field of environment and climate, Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 which was stated in the MoU signed by the Minister of Environment and Forestry and the Minister of State for Asia, Energy, Climate and Environment, UK. Through this MoU, both parties aim to build a stronger friendship, to realize real and effective climate action on the ground. "Indonesia plays a major role in ensuring that all commitments set out in the G20 agenda are met, including the energy transition, as we seek to address the increasing impacts of climate change and keep the Paris Agreement temperature targets within reach," he said.

Also present on the occasion were the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Owen Jenkins, and the Head of the Bali Provincial Environment and Forestry Service, I Made Teja.( Rls/Btnc)
